How to Become Pulmonologist in India?

Pulmonologists are the people who trained for diseases of the chest, especially asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, and chest diseases.

Pulmonology is one of the studies that deals with diseases relating to the respiratory system, this is also known as respiratory medicine. The doctor is also known as respirology.

To become a pulmonologist a student has to learn for 51/2 years. He has to study M.B.B.S and has to finish his/her M.D which is for 3 years. Students have to write NEET, and AIIMS to complete their medicine course.

Several Universities and colleges conduct entrance exams for the students to appear for the medical examination. They have to pursue M.B.B.S and M.D to become a pulmonologist.

Popular examinations are NEEETNPG, BHU M.D, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research Entrance Exam, and the Delhi University Post Graduate Medical Entrance test.

Students must enrol in the bachelor’s degree after completing their Intermediate or 10+2. After completion of the bachelor’s degree students has to do the specialization in post-graduation in the field of Pulmonology, same as the other fields.

Once they are done with their master’s degree the candidate has to do an internship for two years and they can begin practicing pulmonology.

The main Master’s Degrees are:

  • DM in Pulmonology
  • MD in Respiratory Science
  • MD in Pulmonary Medicine
  • MPT Cardiopulmonary Science

Skills Required for the Pulmonology

Here are a few things we required from Pulmonology communication skills, Patience, Attention to detail, Hardworking, and Science skill.

Communication Skills

A medico must have good communication skills that are required by a Pulmonology to communicate with the patient. When the team working for the operation has to be knitted that can only be through proper communication. Communicating effectively becomes a strong and high stake team environment.

Patience

This is one of the important factors every doctor must have. They have many issues while handling patients or taking any decisions. They need to stay calm and take decisions. Pulmonology is the people who handle respiratory diseases and help critically ill or unstable people alive. At such a point in time, pulmonology has to stay calm and move ahead.

Science Skills

Not only in this field, but every person should also have keen knowledge and understanding of the subject. Not only to achieve a career in pulmonology but also the student needs to havean interest in technology and science. A good academy is a non-negotiable requirement in any professional that can be achieved through interest and knowledge in the subject.

Hard-working

The student planning to join the medicine has to think about how hard he/she has to work hard. To pursue Pulmonology, one has to study for several years putting all the effort to work for extended hours in this field.

Attention to detail

The pulmonology needs to take important decisions while treating the patients or at the time of surgery. They have to stay attentive and work properly under any pressure. They have to pay attention to small or minor things while dealing with patients.

Once the student finishes his/her courses they have to join the internships which will help them become Pulmonologists. So here are a few certified courses for students to become pulmonologists:

  3. Nanotechnology for Health
  4. Drug and Medical Device Development

Internships are considered the possible way to have experience in this career. This field of medicine is very tough and critical as it deals with the lives of humans. It is compulsory to have practice before we start professionally.

If any intern performs well during this process many hospitals hire the candidate for full-time as employment is raising rapidly these days. The student can get the internship while he is in college or can also contact any hospital directly and join for 1 or 2 years.

Role of pulmonologist

Pulmonologists are highly specialized and focused on the health of the respiratory system like the lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity chest, and other parts of the respiratory system. They also diagnoseand treat cancer-related in the respiratory system.

Managing the care of chronic respiratory disease is the main duty pulmonologist. These also have emphysema, TB, lung cancer, asthma, etc. they also teach patients how to manage their illness, lifestyle changes, and how to cope with strategies to minimize medicines.

Pulmonologists assess patients’ ability to survive the surgery. They create breathing strategies for each patient. The pulmonologist stays with the entire process of surgery and leads the anaesthesiologist and surgeon. Once the surgery is done the pulmonology will monitor the patient’s condition until he is stable.

Career path for Pulmonologist

Pulmonologists

They are specialized in the skills and knowledge to diagnose, test, and treat patients who are suffering from the respiratory system. They help patients to understand their disease, and test them accordingly. Depending on the test they will start the treatment and give the medicine to the patients.

Pulmonary Surgeons: these are the medical practitioners who are skilled in respiratory surgery. To become a surgeon the student has to acquire both a Bachelor’s and master’s degree along with an internship of 3-4 years.

Pulmonary Educator

To become an educator in the field of pulmonology the candidate must have a Ph.D. in pulmonology. It takes many years to get the experience to teach aspiring pulmonologists.

Salary of pulmonologists

The pulmonologist is a medical practitioner with having specialization in the field of pulmonology and takes care of a patient’s respiratory systems.

The salary of pulmonologists depends on the years of experience they have. This is a highly skilled job like other medical related and they get a decent amount.

The average salary ranges from 40000- 50000 from junior level to senior level

Pulmonary surgeon

The salary range for the surgeon ranges between 50000 – 60000

Pulmonary educator

The salary of the pulmonary educator ranges from 55000- 65000

Currently, the scenario for pulmonologists is very bright and has many job openings in both the public and private sectors. The main reason for the increase in pulmonology is because of the stress and fast-moving life causing hypertension at early ages.
