Are you looking to pursue a job as an operation theatre assistant/technician? Are you aiming to earn a certificate or diploma in operation theatre technology? If yes, you are in the perfectly right place.

In this guide, you will find a couple of OTT courses you can pursue after completing your school. The guide covers all the details, including eligibility criteria, admission process, and different career prospects.

Who is an OT assistant? What are their exact tasks?

An OT assistant or technician works as an allied healthcare professional. They get training to help doctors and/surgeons during surgeries and other pre- and post-surgery procedures. OTT course is gaining a lot of popularity these days and is considered one of the top job-oriented paramedical courses with mid-range salary.

During surgery, different types of instruments, equipment, anaesthesia, etc. are used. And an OT assistant is trained to handle and, at times, uses these instruments, provide anaesthesia and other drugs to the doctor or surgeon, and arrange different surgical instruments before and as well as during the surgery.

An OT assistant is normally a part of a healthcare team that consists of doctors, surgeons, nurses, ward boys, and other paramedical staff. They work under the proper guidance and instruction from the doctors/surgeons. With experience, OT technicians also start controlling basic patient monitor systems like ICUs, CCUs, and other hospitals’ emergency departments.

Operation Theatre Technology Courses in India

Depending on your qualification, you can opt from three different formats.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree Courses
  • Diploma Courses
  • Certificate Courses

Let’s know about these courses in detail.

#1 Bachelor of Science Degree Courses

Universities in India are offering numerous B. Sc. courses related to operation theatre technology. Once you complete one of the B. Sc. courses, you will earn a “Bachelor of Science” degree. Among all three courses, the degree course is the most valuable one.

Different types of B.Sc. OTT courses in India are –

  • B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology
  • B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Techniques
  • B.Sc. in Medical Technology (Operation Theatre)
  • B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Management
  • B.Sc. in Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Management
  • B.Sc. in Surgical Technology

Duration: Like most of the B.Sc. courses, these OT courses are of three years too. Usually, colleges divide these three years into six semesters of 6 months, consisting of classroom lectures and practical classes. You will have to pass both written exams and practical tests every six months to complete your degree course.

Eligibility: If we look at the course design from most institutes, you have to pass your 10+2 examination with at least 45% marks in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

#2 Diploma Courses

Though the B.Sc. courses are of great value, you can’t ignore the importance of diploma courses! They are also counted as job-oriented courses with mid-range salary. If you don’t have the budget or time to complete a bachelor’s degree course, the diploma is undoubtedly is a smart option for you.

Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology or D.OTT is also known as Diploma in Operation Theatre Technician and Diploma in Operation Theatre Techniques.

Duration: Most of the institutes in India offer D.OTT courses in two variants. The regular diploma course is for two years, and its shorter variant is of one-year duration. In both the courses, you will have to attend classroom lectures along with practical sessions.

Eligibility criteria: Students passed 10+2 from any stream, and a central government-recognized board can apply for D.OTT courses.

#3 Certificate Courses

Operation theatre technology courses at certificate level are not of immense value, especially compared to a degree or diploma course discussed above. But, most of the certificate courses are known for acquiring different skills – and that’s, of course, a big bonus for anyone out there. And there are very good chances for you to earn a job in the allied healthcare sector.

Duration: Certificate course in OTT is of 6 months to one year – usually of 6 months.

Eligibility Criteria: You can apply for a certificate course in OTT after completing your 10th.

Jobs and Salary:

  • Clinical and medical laboratory technologist – INR 8,000 to 15,000 per month
  • Medical assistants – INR 8,000 to 15,000 per month
  • Dental assistants – INR 8,000 to 15,000 per month

Operation theatre technicians are extremely important as allied healthcare professionals. They are vital cog of any healthcare system/institution and ensure hassle-free functioning of different medical units, including operation theatres, ICUs, CCUs, private clinics, etc.

Both government and private healthcare sectors keep looking for skilled, serious people who can make life easier for doctors and surgeons and ensure better patient services. The scope for jobs is huge and is expected to go upwards only.

So, if you aim to earn a respected job as an allied healthcare professional, operation theatre technology is a door for you. We recommend a B.Sc. course in OTT, but you can also check out various diploma and certificate courses, especially if you don’t have a lot of time to get financially settled.
