How to Become Government Teacher: Eligibility and Selection Procedure
Depending on the level you’d like to teach, you need graduation with teacher training to get government teacher job.
Central and state government will held teacher eligibility test by which you can easily get placed as government school teacher.
Difference between PRT (primary teacher), TGT (upper primary) and PGT (Inter college).
PRT (Primary Teachers): (1 to 5th level)
After 12th you must get training in BTC, NTT or B.L.Ed to appear for CTET or TET. Once you clear TET or CTET you’ll have 5-7 years validity certificate.
To CBSE schools you must have CTET, for state syllabus schools you must have TET.

TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) (6 to 10th Level)
After completing graduation in any stream you must complete B.Ed course. After B.Ed you’ll be eligible to appear for CTET or TET entrance exams.
PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) (11 and 12th Level)
Post graduation from any field will be eligible for this job profile. However, some institute or state governments may ask for B.Ed. You must check the notification.
CTET or TET to Get Government Teacher Job
It is mandatory to clear Teacher Eligibility Test conducted by Central or State Government to get government school teacher job.
After checking previous year pass percentage we can include CTET as one among the toughest exams in India. Only, 13 % percent people cleared CTET in 2016.
To teach CBSE syllabus in reputed schools, it’s compulsory to have CTET (in few schools). These certificates are valid for about 7 years. You can get placed before that.
Test Pattern
Both CTET and TET have 2 papers, Paper – 1 and Paper – 2.
Paper – 1 is for those who would like to teach for class -1th to 5th
Paper – 2 test is for those who would like to teach for class 6th – 10th

Age limit for TET is 18 years to 35 years. Reservation for SC/ST candidates upto 5 years

Exam fee for CTET and TET
You must check the official notification release by Central and State Government.
Approximately fee for paper – 1 will be 700 INR and 1200 INR for both papers. SC/ST candidates can avail the benefit of paying half of the amount (you need to submit the SC/ST certificate while applying).
You can apply for both Paper-1 and Paper-2 at the same time. Though you may write two papers at the same time, 1-2 hours time will be available between two papers.
CTET is conducted by CBSE board, whereas TET is conducted by state government.

For Class 1st to 5th Level.
Pattern we will be nearly same for CTET and TET. It’s a objective paper, where you’ll have 150 questions that need to be completed in 150 minutes.

Note: For Social teacher you must opt for social studies and mathematics (science) for Science teacher.
You’ve no negative marks and you have got 1 minute for every objective (multiple) question to answer.
What is Pass Marks for CTET and TET?
- Qualifying marks is about 90 marks (60 percent) for general category.
- SC/ST candidates passing marks is 83 marks and about 55 percent.

How to Apply for Government Teacher Job?
After qualifying for CTET/TET entrance test, you’ll be provided with certificate of eligibility to teach for primary or upper primary classes.
According to notification released by authorities for the annual year, you need to check if you’re eligible or not.
Basic qualification needed Diploma in Education (D.Ed.), Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed.) or Master’s Degree in Education (M.Ed.).
Procedure to become teacher in central and state government may be different.
In Kendriya Vidyalaya, you’ll have to appear for practical exam depending on the level you’re about to teach. i.e. for KVS PRT, KVS TGT & PRT PGT.
After clearing the written exam you’ll be promoted to interview round where the selection will be done on merit base.
Selection procedure may vary depending on state and central governments.

Many private or corporate schools give priority to candidates with CTET/TET qualification over others. Also, you can expect good salary.
Few private schools are paying no less than government schools. However, you can never compare the long term benefit of government school teacher.
