How to Join Indian Navy After 12th Commerce & Arts?

Though the Indian Navy protects the entire country’s water boundaries, there are various posts available for the candidates, including both water and ground duties.

The Indian Navy is a career opportunity for Students who study Science stream in their senior secondary years with all that is known. No other candidates who have pursued their senior secondary through other streams are eligible for a maximum of the posts in the Indian Navy.

Are 12th Commerce & Arts Students Eligible to Join Indian Navy?

Yes, 12th Commerce & Arts students are eligible to join the Indian Navy, but there are limited post options. Only Science students can study further for the Indian Navy (through NDA) and get officer rank posts as per their eligibility. However, there’s one way by which 12th Commerce & Arts students can join the Indian Navy with officer rank, and that is: After completing their LLB degree.

Commerce and Arts candidates who have earned their Law degree as advocates under the Advocates Act, 1961, are eligible for joining the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Department of the Indian Naval services (Indian Navy).

Candidates who hold a law degree and are appointed as a Judge Advocate under Section 168 of the Navy Act, 1957 as deemed as a Judicial officer. The Judge Advocate General Department is the foundation of law in Indian Naval Services, which grants to a disciplined force through legally targeted solutions about legal and judicial duties.

These officers’ primary role delivers solution-oriented legal advice that is operationally focused and independent, dedicatedly reinforcing the naval operations and a sound naval administration.

  • The duty of a JAG officer is quite crucial in the Indian Naval services. The law candidates who aspire to apply for Indian Naval services must undergo the Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy at Kerala and Ezhimala. The course is followed by professional training conducted by Naval Training Establishment, ships, and other related units.
  • Later after being a JAG officer, individuals have to pursue some of the definite courses at the Indian Institute of Military law (IML) Nagpur and Kamptee or other prestigious LAW colleges in India.

JAG OFFICER Eligibility list:

  • Minimum 55% aggregate marks in LLB Degree.
  • Must be a registered advocate with Bar Council of India/State.
  • Must hold either of the citizenship: Indian, Nepal. A person of Indian origin who have migrated from Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and some of the particular East African countries before 1962 and are now noted as citizens of India.
  • Age limit: 21 to 27 years
  • Selection procedure: Written examination, SSB, Interview

*The Direct permanent commissions for graduate-level entries are also open for Sports and Musicians.

Apart from this, there is some non-officer post for which 12th Commerce & Arts students can apply as well: It includes:

  • Logistics
  • Naval Armament Inspectorate Cadre (NAIC)
  • Education
  • Hydro
  • General Service – Executive
  • Draughtsman
  • Chef (MR)
  • Steward (MR)
  • Sanitary Hygienist (MR)

All of these posts are for permanent commission and short service commission.

Selection procedure: Written examination and physical fitness test.

These posts are for an on-board ship, and candidates must undergo 14 weeks of Basic Training at INS Chilka. Another professional training follows the training in various Naval Training Establishments.

Age limit– 17 to 20 years.

The candidates who apply for these non-officer posts get a stipend of Rs. 14,600/- during their training period. After the training compilation, the candidates earn anywhere between ₹ 21,700 to ₹69,100 + MSP ₹ 5200 + depending upon the level there are placed. The promotion procedure exists as well for those who keep qualifying the prescribed examinations and keep performing well.

How Can I Join the Indian Navy After the 12th?

Joining the Indian Navy after completing the 12th Boards requires the candidates to pass upon various hurdles and fulfil several requirements. There are several posts available for 12th Science students with multiple divisions and specializations.

There are two ways for 12th Science students to join Indian Navy:

  1. Through National Defence Academy (NDA) examination
  2. Through Naval Academy (NA) examination.

National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy (NA) examination| Eligibility and criteria

  • NDA entrance examinations are conducted twice a year in March and October via UPSC.
  • 12th Passed with Physics and Maths from a recognized Indian board.
  • Minimum 60% aggregate
  • Marital status: Unmarried
  • Age limit: 16 ½ to 19 years (DOB as mentioned in the 10th Certificate)
  • No visible body tattoos are accepted during SSB. The candidates having any visible tattoo will get rejected.
  • SSB Stage I: Intelligence Test, Picture Perception and Discussion test.
  • SSB Stage II: Psychological testing, Group testing, and interview.
  • Medical examination: 3 to 5 days approximately

Physical Standards laid by the Indian Navy.

  • Absence of nose, throat, or ear disease
  • Absence of Hernia.
  • Absence of genital- urinary tract diseases.
  • Absence of congenital disabilities
  • Absence of any mental illness.
  • A healthy set of teeth’s and gums
  • Perfect hearing ability
  • No chances of speech impediment
  • No traces of nose, throat, or ear disease.
  • Well-shaped chest, joints, limbs, and toes.
  • No flat foot.
  • No knock knees.
  • Perfect 6/6, 6/6 eyesight
  • Myopia/hypermetropia: -.75/+1.5 (limit)

Applicants also have to follow the shortlisting procedure governed by the Naval Headquarters (Directorate of Manpower Planning & Recruitment), and selection is made on a merit basis alone.

For BTech Cadet entry

BE or BTech Degree from a recognized university with minimum 60% aggregate pursue any of these categories and later join the Indian Navy:

  • Aeronautical
  • Production
  • Metallurgy
  • Control
  • Marine
  • Mechanical
  • Mechanical Engineering with Automation
  • Any other allied discipline

These candidates are initiated for officer ranks (Sub-lieutenant). They have to undergo the Naval Orientation Course at the Indian Naval Academy Kerala and Ezhimala. Later followed by professional training at Naval Training Establishments, ships, or the other units.

For all the candidates who have appeared in the National Defence Academy (NDA), the very first post provided in the Indian Navy is of Sub-lieutenant.

The entire course for the Indian Navy commences with 4 ½ years of basic training, followed by 6 months of training at IMA Dehradun. The training is further followed by Stage 1, i.e., 2 ½ years of training College of Military Engineering, Pune.

The Stage 2 training is followed by a further 1 year at any of the colleges depending upon services/ arms allotted:

  • Military College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Secunderabad
  • College of Military Engineering, Pune
  • College of Telecommunication Engineering

The stage 3 training is followed by a further 6 months period in any of the colleges mentioned above.

All of the passed-out candidates are awarded a degree from Jawaharlal University, New Delhi.

Indian Naval Service: Work Environment

The origin of the Indian Navy lies back to East India company’s Marine, founded in 1612. Royal Indian Navy (as named from 1934) was renamed Indian Navy in 1950 after India became a republic.

The work environment for Indian Naval services consists of both Water posting and ground duties. Every candidate has to serve a definite years job at waters before they shift into ground postings. Indian Navy officers’ lifestyle is counted as one of the best and adventurous amongst various other jobs.

However, they have to undergo frequent transfers, difficult/challenging life, and odd + longer working hours.

Indian Naval Services: Additional facilities

Apart from salary, there are several perks of serving in the Indian Navy. Some of them count as:

How to Join the Indian Navy After 12th for Girls?

Till the year 1992, the Indian Navy conducted recruitment for women in only Armed Forces Medical Service. Though from July 1992, women were started getting inducted as Short Service Commissioned Officers.  Currently, women are allowed to serve within 8 different branches in the Indian Navy.
